How can I calculate silicon strain effect at [001] direction and [111]direction?

1.I also want to ask the paper "Yet-Ful Tsay, PRB vol16, num6, 1977" Fig 3 . Is there any relation between the special kpoints at silicon strain [001] and [111] directions ? Why the author want to calculated those kpoints ??

2.How to calculated the strained effect at [001] and [111]directions ?
